Trail Blazer forward Qyntel Woods allegedly abandoned a 2 year old female pit bull on Saturday afternoon.   The dog was found with fresh puncture wounds, scars, bruising and worms. She was also covered with hot tar, a cheap antiseptic used by people who fight pit bulls.

"I was going to breed it with my other dog, but they didn't take, so I just decided to get rid of it," Woods told KATU News when asked about Hollywood.

Woods says he gave the dog to a man in an alley off of Northeast Killingsworth and Martin Luther King Boulevard Saturday afternoon. Woods denies using the dog as a fighter and says he has never pitted pit bulls against each other.

According to the KATU report, the dog, named Hollywood, had wounds on its chest, abdomen and legs that were consistent with fighting. Gabby Cholak with K-9 Rescue says Hollywood's wounds are fresh enough that the dog could have been used in a fight fairly recently.

"I think she could have been in a fight as late as Friday or Saturday," Cholak said. "The wounds - there was still blood coming off of them a little bit when I picked her up Saturday evening."

Clackamas County Animal Control has been notified and as for Hollywood, she is recovering and retraining.

"I really hope that ultimately she can be placed for adoption in a good, loving home that she really deserves."

Mike Oswald, director of Multnomah County Animal Services, said his agency began an investigation Wednesday and that the investigating officer planned to interview Woods.

"We have a couple of leads that should help us figure out what happened," Oswald said. He said the county would impound the dog today and have its injuries assessed by a veterinarian before determining whether charges would be filed.

Since coming to Portland, Woods has been charged with drug possession, driving with a suspended license and driving without proof of insurance. Dog fighting is a felony in Oregon.

Clackamas County detectives are trying to verify reports that there were dogfights in Linn County, and whether Blazer players were involved.

The tipline number is 503-723-4949 and police say tipsters can remain anonymous.

Woods has completed his court ordered community service. Back in January, a judge ordered Woods to pay the Oregon Humane Society $10,000, in addition to completing 80 hours of community service, which it appears he did with the Red Cross in Miami. A Red Cross spokesperson told KATU News that Woods worked to clean out a warehouse used by emergency services.

Woods has worn three jerseys in less than a year - first in Portland, then Miami and finally Boston, which cut him last week.

The caretaker of an already-mistreated pit bull owned by former Portland Trail Blazer Qyntel Woods has pleaded guilty to animal abuse and was sentenced to 80 hours of community service.

Robert Page, 26, who now lives in Arizona, submitted his plea by mail. He was listed in a 2004 dog control record as the caretaker of the dog, which was found last October in an alley with cuts, bruises and scars.

Authorities found bloody pawprints and blood smears when they searched Woods' Lake Oswego home that month and suspected dogfighting but neither Page nor Woods was charged with that.

Woods pleaded guilty in January to animal abuse and sentenced to a year of probation and 80 hours of community service. The Blazers quickly dismissed the 6-foot-8 guard, who now plays for the Miami Heat.

The dog lives with a new owner in Bend.

The Portland Trail Blazers waived forward Qyntel Woods on Friday, the same day the player pleaded guilty to abusing his pit bull.

Woods, 23, appeared in court to enter the misdemeanor plea, part of an agreement following an investigation into allegations of dog fighting. He was sentenced to 12 months probation and 80 hours of community service.

"In light of today's developments, it is clear that the Trail Blazers and Qyntel Woods must part ways," Trail Blazers president Steve Patterson said in a statement. "We are confident that this action is both justified and appropriate."

Woods' attorney Stephen Houze made a brief statement in court that acknowledged the player had not taken proper care of his pit bull, but did not mention dog fighting.

"I've tried to be a responsible pet owner all my life. Because of that, I am very sorry and saddened that my dog, Hollywood, was injured," Woods said in the statement read by his attorney. "I also deeply regret the concern this has caused other pet owners and citizens in our community."

Woods had faced a more serious charge of dog fighting, a felony in Oregon. Promoting or conducting dog fighting is punishable by up to $100,000 in fines and up to five years in jail.

The Trail Blazers suspended Woods indefinitely without pay on Oct. 12. He was in the final year of a three-year contract that would have paid him $1.1 million.

Woods has not been charged with any crime involving the allegations and is only under investigation at this point.
