74 collies, 7 sheep seized
Esparto, CA (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Sep 29, 2004
County: Yolo

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Ronald Wilson

Case Updates: 4 update(s) available

Over 60 collies, 7 sheep and several fowl were removed from a home in Esparto for purposes of a health and welfare inspection yesterday morning. According to Vicky Fletcher, Chief Animal Service Officer, this special operation has been under investigation and in progress for over a year.

While the specific conditions the dogs were living in are still under investigation, Fletcher said that the overall health and number of animals in the housing area is the reason Animal Services intervened.

The Yolo County Animal Services Officers, Deputies, and District Attorney investigators served a warrant at 8 a.m. in the 17000 Block of County Road 85C.

The owner of the dogs, Chauncy Wilson was a former Contra Costa County resident in 1999.

The removal of the animals was a multi-agency effort with help from El Dorado Animal Services officers who assisted with a truck and livestock trailer to help remove the animals. Veterinarians from UC Davis Shelter Medicine Program were on site to help evaluate the animals health conditions.

Yolo County SPCA was on-site to photograph the animals for identification and health documentation purposes.

In 1999 Wilson lived in Richmond with 54 dogs. Wilson worked as a special education teacher at Fremont High School in Oakland and was ordered to remove all the dogs except three as the Richmond jurisdiction has a three-dog maximum.

The Area Coordinator for the Central Valley and Foothills, from the California Collie Rescue Coalition was instrumental in getting the necessary cages, equipment and volunteers to help care for the collies.

"We do not know how long we will have the dogs in custody," Fletcher said.

Yolo County Animal Services is currently seeking help from the community for volunteers to help care for the animals and wash cages. Animal Services is seeking monetary donations to help with the medical needs and specialty needs.

Case Updates

On Dec. 5, 2005, Wilson pled no contest to two felony counts and one misdemeanor charge of animal abuse and agreed to pay $20,000 in restitution for the care of the dogs.

He also relinquished ownership of the collies and agreed not to have any more dogs for three years in exchange for his convictions being discharged later if he meets the court's conditions.

A man charged with 74 counts of animal abuse appeared in court Monday to begin his hearing, but the case was continued while attorneys attempt to reach a settlement.

Ronald Wilson, commonly known as "Chauncey," was charged with seven felony counts and 67 misdemeanor accounts of animal abuse in September 2004 after 74 collies were found in his kennel without proper food, drink, shelter or protection from weather.

If a settlement is not reached before his next court date Wilson will stand trial. The next date is scheduled for Nov. 14.

The 74 collies taken from Ronald "Chauncey" Wilson's Esparto home have been moved from the Yolo County Fairgrounds to UC Davis. Overall, the collies are doing well and the Animal Services Department has appreciated all the donations from the public and other collie agencies, said Chief Animal Service Officer Vicky Fletcher for Yolo County.

Since the collies and other animals were taken to UCD, 15 of the collies are in foster care due to continuing skin conditions that require special attention and one sheep was euthanized due to major infections.

The motion to return his 72 collies, seven sheep, three horses, 44 chickens and six roosters was denied by Yolo County Superior Court Judge Stephen Mock on Nov. 9.

If Wilson is found guilty of the felony and misdemeanor charges the dogs and other animals will remain in the custody of the Yolo County Animal Services Department. Fletcher said Animal Services would work closely with Collie Associations to find homes for the animals that can provide the special attention the dogs need.

The Yolo County District Attorney's office is seeking any individuals who have adopted a collie from Ronald Wilson or Ronald Chauncey Wilson, Carolyn Wilson or Chauncey Kennels since the year 2000. For information, contact the Yolo County Animal Services at 668-5287.

Two months after 60 collies, seven sheep and multiple fowl were removed from a home in Esparto, their owner was charged with multiple counts of animal abuse.

While Ronald "Chauncy" Wilson is charged with 74 counts of animal abuse, he asked that the animals be returned and requested compensation from the County for taking his personal property.

Last week, Wilson pleaded not guilty to seven felony and 67 misdemeanor charges. Six felony counts were for the abuse of collies
