A man who allegedly beat his mother's dog with a rock in front of police officers faces felony charges of extreme cruelty to animals.

Orlando "Rudy" Chavez, 49, also was charged in a grand jury indictment filed Tuesday with resisting or evading an officer.

Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department officers responded to his mother's call to her South Valley home on March 13 after the two got into a verbal fight.
