Two dogs were shot randomly in Denver Saturday, one of them is dead. A white van drove by two different homes within minutes of each other and someone intentionally tried to kill the dogs, according to police.
The first shooting happened around 8 a.m. at 1140 S. Perry in west Denver. The second shooting happened at 1299 S. Quivas.
A 5-year-old Siberian Husky named Roxie was shot in the head and killed instantly in the first shooting. She was in her backyard when a van drove down the adjacent alley and a person inside fired at her.
The dog shot at the second house is going to survive. She is a 10-month old boxer named Kita. She was also playing in her back yard when she was shot in the chest.
The two shootings were just a few blocks apart.
A van drove by the yard where Kita was playing and a man pulled out a gun then shot her in the chest.
"I thought it was pretty sick. Somebody demented who would go around and want to shoot my dog, who's a very friendly dog," said Julian Montoya, Kita's owner. "She's a female boxer. She's so loving and friendly."
Kita's fate was nearly the same as Roxie's. Her vet says the bullet just barely missed her vital organs.
"There's no outright bullet anymore, but you can see some bullet fragments," said Dr. Eyal Sittenfeld, Kita's veterinarian.
Montoya was at home when Kita was shot. He ran outside after hearing the shots. Montoya says he regrets chasing the van.
"I drove around and then I drove back home and said what am I thinking? I need to get home and take care of my dog before she bleeds to death," he said. "So I went home and my daughter was crying and she said she's dying, she's dying, you need to get her to a doctor."
Montoya quickly brought Kita to the vet and luckily she lived.
"I'm thankful, first of all for the hospital and thankful that my dog is going to be O.K.," Montoya said.
Kita will be able to come home Saturday night.
