A warrant has been issued for a Kingsley woman who allegedly shot and killed a neighbor's dog. Cindy Kay Hood, 53, will face a misdemeanor charge of attempting to kill and torture animals after allegedly shooting a cocker spaniel she said was attacking her chickens on Sept. 5.

In her statement to state police, Hood said she went outside her Dell Road home about 9 p.m. to investigate why the chickens sounded upset and saw a dog chasing them around her yard.

Nancy Gervais, the dog's owner, told police she was riding her bike along the road with the dog, which was not wearing a leash, when it took off in the direction of Hood's home.

Hood allegedly told police she grabbed a firearm from her house and chased the dog around the yard before catching it by the collar and tying it up.

Police said Hood shot and killed the dog instead of attempting to contact animal control or its owner once it was secured.

Hood said in her statement that she heard Gervais calling the dog moments after shooting it and realized it belonged to her neighbors.

Troopers said Hood was advised that she had a right to protect her property and her livestock but should have contacted animal control after securing it.

Police said Gervais and her husband collected the dog's body and took it home. If convicted on the charge, Hood faces a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
