Dog thrown off bridge
Libertyville, IL (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Sep 10, 2004
County: Lake

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Steven Green

A Round Lake Beach man faces charges for allegedly throwing a dog off of the Oak Spring Road bridge over the Des Plaines River in Libertyville Township on Friday. Steven Green, of the 1100 block of Villa Vista, was charged with cruel treatment to an animal, a Class A misdemeanor, according to the Lake County sheriff's office.

An area resident called Libertyville police after witnessing Green roughly dragging the dog by its lead down Oak Spring Road, according to Sgt. Christopher Thompson of the sheriff's office.

The responding officer then witnessed Green pick up the small brown dog and throw it over the bridge into the river below, Thompson said.

The Libertyville police officer picked up the dog, which swam to the river bank and appeared scared but unharmed. Green was detained and charged by the sheriff's office, which has jurisdiction in the area.

The dog, a shepherd mix, was taken to the Lake County Health Department Animal Control facility and was scheduled to be located in a new home Monday, according to health department spokeswoman Leslie Piotrowski.
