A Chillicothe man charged in connection with the death of his friend's 5-week-old kitten pleaded guilty Monday (Sept 13, 2004) to aggravated cruelty to animals.
Gary P. Davis, 43, of 1513 N. Fourth, Lot 1, was sentenced to 30 months' probation and 90 days in the Peoria County Jail, which was stayed pending a December 2005 hearing in Peoria County Circuit Court.
As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to drop additional charges of criminal damage to property and criminal trespass to residence.
Davis had gone over to his female friend's home on Sept. 14, 2003, and the two began to argue, said Assistant State's Attorney Deborah Shelby. The kitten jumped onto Davis' leg, but the woman grabbed the kitten when Davis made a motion like he was going to hit the cat.
At some point, the kitten got away from the woman and was playing with a loose piece of string. Shelby said the woman saw Davis make a motion towards the cat. When she looked at the cat, it was writhing on the ground and bleeding from the head.
Officers who arrived a short time later found the cat's head had been nearly flattened, Shelby said in court. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
