Robert Escobedo, the Glendale man accused of savagely abusing a three-month-old puppy in July, rejected a plea dealin Maricopa County Superior Court and will now stand trial on one felony count of cruelty to animals.

Escobedo is accused of a brutal attack on a puppy who was rescued July 17 from a trash bin at a Glendale apartment complex. The puppy had been stabbed repeatedly, bound with duct tape and thrown away. She was rescued by the Arizona Humane Society and adopted five days later by the AHS pet paramedic who saved her.

Meanwhile, Glendale police arrested Escobedo just two days after the alleged incident occurred.

Reportedly, Escobedo has been incarcerated since his arrest, and will remain in jail pending the outcome of his trial. Escobedo's trial date was set for December 1, 2004, in Maricopa County Superior Court.

If convicted on the Class 6 felony charge, Escobedo could serve one year in prison and be fined $150,000. Under the plea deal, he would've served six months in jail.

Case Updates

Escobedo was sentenced Friday to three years' probation. He also received a deferred seven-month jail sentence from Judge Jeffrey Cates of Maricopa County Superior Court.

Delayed terms are imposed by the court to give probationers an incentive to stay out of trouble. Under court rules, Escobedo may petition later to have the jail sentence dropped. advertisement

Glendale police arrested Escobedo after a bloody puppy was found July 17in a trash dumpster in an apartment complex in the 6200 block of North 67th Avenue.

Escobedo was jailed two days later after making statements to police who questioned him about the dog attack, said Officer Mike Pea, a Glendale police spokesman.

On Nov. 5, Escobedo pleaded guilty to a felony charge of cruelty to animals, court records show.

The Arizona Humane Society took custody of the dehydrated dog, which was wrapped in duct tape and had an open stomach wound.

The agency said Friday that the dog, now known as Riley, not only has survived but has been adopted by a woman who helped saved the animal's life.
