Case Updates: 2 update(s) available

An 11-year-old Indianapolis girl faces legal trouble after witnesses told Indianapolis police she intentionally mistreated a kitten Saturday night by swinging it in the air with a cord tied around its neck.

The girl was arrested on a Class A misdemeanor charge of torturing or killing a vertebrate animal. Animal Care and Control officials said in a report that the animal had to be euthanized because of injuries to its neck and its poor health.

The incident happened in the 2300 block of North Moreland Avenue around 6:30 p.m. An Indianapolis police officer who arrived to investigate also reported seeing the girl slam the kitten onto a wagon and heard the kitten cry out, according to a report.

Case Updates

A 12-year-old Indianapolis girl who plead guilty to torturing a kitten has been sentenced. Judge Scott Stowers ordered Helen Mushangwe to a minimum 3-month probation term, individual counseling, 25 hours of community service, and a prohibition from having contact with any animals for the probationary period. Her next hearing is on March 9 2005, at which time it will be determined whether the probation will be extended.

The girl allegedly swung the innocent kitten in the air with a cord tied around his/her neck and slammed him/her into a toy wagon. She reportedly showed no signs of remorse and "just stared" at the arresting officer when asked why she treated the kitten that way. The kitten had to be euthanized.

An 11-year-old Indianapolis girl accused of torturing a kitten last weekend will remain on home detention until she faces trial next month on a charge of animal cruelty.

The girl is accused of swinging a kitten in the air with a cord tied around its neck and slamming it into a toy wagon. The animal was euthanized, police said.

The girl is scheduled to be tried Oct. 13 in Marion County juvenile court. If she is found guilty, prosecutors will seek to place her in a treatment program. In adult court, animal cruelty is a Class D felony that carries a sentence of six months to three years in prison.

According to court documents, Indianapolis police were called to a home in the 2300 block of North Moreland Avenue about 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The responding officer saw the child swinging the kitten and heard the animal yelp in pain.

"I placed (the girl) in handcuffs and asked her why she was treating the animal that way," Officer Christopher Cooper wrote in court documents. "She responded by just staring at me."

The girl showed no signs of remorse, Cooper reported.
