Dozens of dead animals litter barn
Wood County, WI (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Aug 26, 2004
County: Wood

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Wood County officials are investigating the death of dozens of animals found on a farm where the Sheriff's Department was serving eviction papers. Previous Owners are not known at this time.

Authorities found 18 to 20 pig carcasses and 20 to 30 dead chickens in a barn at 3510 Ervin Ave. in the town of Sigel while serving eviction papers there Monday morning, said Deputy Richard Krohn.

Krohn did not know on Wednesday how the animals had died.

If the previous owners are found responsible for the animals' deaths, charges could range from citations to felonies, said Wood County District Attorney Todd Wolf. If a person's mistreatment or neglect of an animal leads to its death, he could be charged with a felony punishable by up to 31Ú2 years in prison, Wolf said. A separate charge could be filed for each dead animal.

On Wednesday, Wolf had not yet received any information about the case. Krohn said he would not know if the Sheriff's Department would be requesting charges until the county's humane officer determined the cause of the animals' death. The humane officer was not available for comment on Wednesday.
