47 Malnourished Potbellied Pigs Seized
Fayetteville, NC (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Aug 20, 2004
County: Cumberland

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: James Thurston Farrell, II

Eight animal control officers in Cumberland County and six volunteers spent four hours siezing 47 pot-bellied pigs from the property of James Thurston Farrell II, 37, was charged with 47 counts of animal cruelty. He is free on $3,200 bond pending a hearing.

Investigator Stacie Colbourne says they lured the first batch of pigs into trailers with food. But the others caught on, leaving workers with no choice but to chase down the animals.

Animal control officers were called to the home by health officials who condemned Farrell's trailer home.

They found six sets of skeletal pig remains along the edge of woods on the property, said Stacie Colbourne, the lead animal control officer with Cumberland County Animal Control.

Colbourne says most of the pigs were so malnourished that their ribs showed. Six dead animals were also found.

The pigs are receiving care and the county is looking for people to take them.
