The Kennebec Valley Humane Society has been scrambling to find room for 54 dogs and cats that were allegedly mistreated and were seized last week from breeders in Washington County and a former Litchfield veterinarian. The shelter cannot put the animals out for adoption until a court hearing is scheduled to determine permanent possession veterinary license was suspended.
Animal welfare agents and police seized 15 cats and seven German shepherds Friday from the home of Nancy Hahnel, whose license to practice veterinary medicine was suspended.
Hahnel formerly operated Atlantic Animal Hospital in Litchfield. Her veterinary license was suspended in May 2004 following complaints of incompetence or gross negligence, cruelty to animals, lack of sanitation and unprofessional conduct. A hearing on the suspension was postponed until Sept. 1, 2004.
