A Marquette County couple has been charged with animal cruelty.
Seventy-five cats were taken from their Ishpeming Township home, July 19, 2004.
According to the Marquette county prosecutor's office, 79-year-old Lewis Rosenbaum and 54-year-old Grace Aalto-Rosenbaum are facing 10 misdemeanor counts of animal neglect.
The cats were discovered following an anonymous tip. The report says cat feces were all over the home and the condition of the residence was filthy. Some of the animals were in cages, but apparently none were malnourished.
All 75 cats are now at the Marquette County Humane Society. The Rosenbaums will appear in district court, August 17, 2004.
Case Updates| They pled no contest to one count of animal cruelty, but expenses for rehabilitating the cats are still adding up. There were too many to keep at the Negaunee Township shelter, plus disease concerns required them to be isolated. After months of work and medical care the first adoptions are now taking place. So far the Humane Society has spent over $60,000 on the cats. They're looking for donations, and people interested in adopting special needs animals, to continue their care. | Source: WLUC-TV - Nov 6, 2004 Update posted on Nov 9, 2004 - 10:06PM |
