In an attempt to escape from Bridgeport police, Peter Joseph allegedly struck a police dog and pushed its head underwater on July 28, 2004.

The incident began when Joseph, 31, ran a stop sign and was signaled to pull over by a Bridgeport police officer. Joseph slowed down but then sped up and a police chase ensued. After going down many side roads and at one point discontinuing the chase because he was in another town, the Bridgeport officer came upon Joseph's vehicle near a wooded area. A Bridgeport K-8 unit was brought in, as well as assistance from the Orange police. Joseph was eventually found walking through a swamp with the water up to his chest. He reportedly ignored officers' commands to stop, so police released the dog into the swamp. While the dog was trying to apprehend the suspect, Joseph allegedly started beating the dog on its head repeatedly, grabbed its neck and pushed its head under the water.

After a brief struggle, Joseph was arrested and charged with interfering with police, cruelty to animals, third-degree criminal trespassing, failure to stop at a stop sign, driving under suspension, having insufficient insurance, reckless driving, driving an unregistered vehicle, misuse of plates and engaging in a police pursuit. Bond was $10,000.
