Throwing puppy from car, hitting it with car
Tulsa, OK (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, May 25, 2003
County: Tulsa

Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Mercado Reynel

Two men ran over a puppy, crushing its hind legs on Sunday May 25, 2003 in a Tulsa parking lot after one threw it from their moving car, police said.

Leaving the puppy, a six- to eight-week-old yellow Labrador retriever, the men drove off at 1:40 p.m. near several flea markets at 9401 E. Admiral Place, police said. The parking lot was filled with families headed to and from the markets.

The men were driving a red, late-model Ford Mustang, Thompson said. Witnesses took down the car's tag number, but police declined to release it.

When witnesses screamed at the men after the car crushed the dog's hind quarters, they only laughed and said they didn't speak English, Thompson said. They drove west on East Admiral Place.

Officer Scott Walton said the dog was having difficulty breathing and was taken to a Tulsa veterinarian's office.

While waiting for animal control officers to arrive, Thompson kept the dog in her police car. Wrapped in a blue plastic and cloth sheet, the puppy's nose moved with each shallow, hurried breath.

Remarkably, the puppy briefly rose up on its front paws and looked around and sniffed her police radio and dashboard before collapsing back to its haunches, Thompson said. Its eyes were partly closed.

Walton said the two men may have been between 25 and 30 years old. Both were described by police as dark complexioned. Police had no further information on their descriptions.
