CONVICTED: Was justice served?

Please vote on whether or not you feel the sentence in this case was appropriate for the crime. (Be sure to read the entire case and sentencing before voting.)

weak sentence = one star
strong sentence = 5 stars

more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Puppy mill Bust - Former Official Charged
Grapevine, KY (US)

County: Pike

Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Randal Good

Case Updates: 2 update(s) available

Former deputy Pike County judge-executive has been charged with 121 counts of animal cruelty.

Randal Good, 55, of Phyllis, who ran unsuccessfully for judge-executive in 2002, was booked in the local jail on Thursday and released on $500 bond.

Animal control workers reported finding malnourished and sick dogs at Good's home, where he operates a commercial kennel. Workers said they found the remains of some animals near the kennel.

An arrest warrant obtained by animal control officer Jennifer Ramey alleges conditions at the kennel were horrible, with 2 to 3 inches of animal waste in cages overcrowded with dogs.

Authorities said Good bred and sold a variety of dog breeds. They said there were 45 dogs and one cat removed from the kennel and 75 more dogs would be removed when the county finds space for them.

Pike County Animal Shelter Director Rodney Keene said foster homes are desperately needed for the dogs. He said the dogs can't be adopted yet because they are evidence, but people can take them in temporarily.

Ramey opened an investigation after responding to a complaint about a golden retriever being kept for three days in a cage next to a road that runs by Good's home.

Good is scheduled to be arraigned at 10 a.m. July 14, 2004 - in Pike District Court.

Case Updates

On July 25, Randal Good entered into a plea agreement where he pled guilty to one count of animal cruelty, instead of the 121 he was originally charged with. He received two years probation. He cannot own animals during the first year, but can during the second year as long as the humane society or animal shelter can drop by and check up on the animals.

The maximum penalty Randal Good could have gotten was one year in jail, a $500 fine and prohibiting him from owning any animals in the future.
