Police cited 30 people Saturday evening after an anonymous tip led to the discovery of a large rooster fight in the Toppenish area.
Officers with Yakima County Sheriff's Office, Washington State Patrol and the Wapato Police Department arrived at the event about 6 p.m. and found more than 100 vehicles parked there.
Organizers had hidden plywood fighting arenas in trees and tall brush along the south side of the Yakima River. When they saw the officers, many of those in attendance fled.
Police recovered spurs, scales, ledgers and other paraphernalia at the scene. Those arrested were cited and released. Attending such an event is a gross misdemeanor.
Sunday night, police were still trying to find out who owned the property where the fight took place. Police left the roosters at the scene, but assume most of them were taken home by their owners, Briscoe said. References« WA State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Yakima County, WA
