Cat tortured with chemicals
Syracuse, NY (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Apr 5, 2002
County: Onondaga

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A cat continues to make small improvements after being tortured over the weekend. As doctors sit and wait to see if he recovers, an award has been posted for information leading to the arrest of those responsible...

Vets say the cat has a 50 % chance of survival, but there are good signs. Doctors say the corneas of the cat, which let light into the eyes, may be okay and that could mean the cat's vision might be restored once swelling goes down. The cat has also begun to purr and they say the feline's mouth and esophagus are not as badly burned as first thought. And to reduce pain, the vets are keeping him on pain killers and medication.

The stray was found over the weekend, badly burned from corrosive chemicals that had been poured over its face and parts of its body. The cat made it to the animal emergency clinic just in time. "You know it's bad enough they get hit by a car or they're attacked by another predatory animal. But it's even worse when you've got a human being who would do this," says S.P.C.A. cruelty investigator Betsy Puffer.

To find the person or people responsible, the S.P.C.A. is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to a conviction. If someone is convicted of doing this, they may end up with more than just a slap on the wrist. The crime is considered aggravated animal abuse, meaning several years of jail time for whoever did this.

And if you think you know who did this, or have information that may help in this case, call the S.P.C.A. animal cruelty division at 454-3469.
