The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the abandonment of a dog on or about June 6 in Woodridge, Illinois.
On Sunday, June 6, Woodridge Police were called to the 7000 block of Woodward Avenue where a dog had been abandoned behind a dumpster. Police arrived at the location to find an extremely malnourished female dog.
Judging by her emaciated state, the dog had been neglected for sometime, according to police. Witnesses described the alleged offender as a black male in his late twenties, wearing a white baseball hat, white t-shirt and dark pants. He was seen driving a new four-door Ford Focus, tan/brown in color.
The dog is currently under veterinary care and will soon be released to DuPage County Animal Control in Wheaton where her condition will be further evaluated. According to a police spokesperson, the dog is in good spirits and continues to improve now that she is receiving proper care.
"Animal abuse and neglect are against the law," said Phillip Snyder, director of The HSUS Central States Regional Office. "It is encouraging to see that the Woodridge Police Department recognizes the serious nature of crimes against animals. We are hopeful that they are able to determine who is responsible for this callous disregard of a helpless animal and that the person or persons responsible are held accountable for their actions."
In Illinois, pet owners are responsible for humane care and treatment of their pets, providing food, water, shelter and veterinary care when needed to prevent suffering. Failure to do so constitutes a Class B misdemeanor.
Animal abandonment constitutes a Class A misdemeanor. A second or subsequent conviction is a Class 4 felony. The Aggravated Cruelty statute prohibits a person from committing an act that causes a companion animal to suffer serious injury or death, and constitutes a Class 4 felony. A second or subsequent violation is a Class 3 felony.
The Woodridge Police Department is vigorously pursuing this case. Anyone with information about this case is asked to please contact the police department at (630) 719-4740. If you have information on this case, please contact: Woodridge Police Department (630) 719-4740
