Backyard castration of dog
Bridgewater, NS (CA)

Incident Date: Thursday, Jun 10, 2004

Disposition: Dismissed

Person of Interest: Catherine Grandy

The SPCA is putting a bounty on the head of "the backyard butcher" of Lunenburg County. "This is a vile, terrible thing," said Judith Gass, the Nova Scotia president of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

She is talking about the backyard castration of a German shepherd mix, barely a year old, that went terribly wrong.

"It's a backyard butcher, and if anybody knows who that person is, we're prepared to pay reward money to get him," she said.

The dog developed a serious infection after the procedure.

But the SPCA doesn't know who performed the procedure and had to settle for charging Catherine Grandy of Upper Branch, the woman who had the dog neutered. Ms. Gass said the woman refuses to disclose who operated on the dog.

Ms. Grandy allegedly took her son Danny's dog from its Bridgewater home to have it castrated for $10. She allegedly said it was to save the family money. The son did not know his mother had taken his pet for the procedure.

"The dog developed a serious, serious infection," Ms. Gass said, and the pet ended up at the Pinegrove Animal Hospital in Bridgewater.

It was seized and has been placed in a new home, Ms. Gass said.

Ms. Grandy was supposed to go to trial June 10, 2004 in Bridgewater provincial court but prosecutor Paul Scovil said he had to drop the charge because he did not have enough evidence to secure a conviction.

Ms. Grandy was charged with "wilfully causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to an animal" under the Animal Cruelty Prevention Act. But Mr. Scovil said she did not perform the operation that caused the pain and suffering, and she took the dog to a vet when she realized it had an infection.

He said he likely would have gone ahead with charges against the person who did the procedure if that person had been tracked down.

Ms. Gass said she's worried this isn't an isolated case. She also had a warning for whoever was behind the botched surgery.

"We are going to be out there looking for you," she said.
