Horse neglect - 3 seized Morrisville, NC (US)Incident Date: Wednesday, Mar 24, 2004 County: Wake

Alleged: Kenneth Davis
Three horses were seized from their owner in Morrisville this week after a tip came in that the animals were not being fed and living in deplorable conditions. The horses' owner, Kenneth Davis, is charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty.
The U.S. Equine Rescue League said the horses were found starving, standing in their own waste and living in small shed.
Investigator Jennifer Hack stated one horse was kept in stall that was nailed shut and it was about an 8-by-8 foot stall, 6 to 8 inches deep in manure. There was no water. The owner admitted she was locked in there about two to three days.
To make a full recovery, Hack said the mare needs to gain 200 to 300 pounds.
Hack said the stallion seized needs to gain about 150 pounds. Both horses were de-wormed and are eating and drinking well.
Hack said the third horse was euthanized because it was pregnant and beyond medical help.
"She was about to deliver a foal in about six weeks and she was about 300 to 400 pounds underweight," Hack said.
The horses are being kept in a secret location -- a secluded ranch -- until the case can be heard in court.
Davis' first appearance on animal neglect charges is scheduled for April 12, 2004. References« NC State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Wake County, NC
