Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

The Wilson County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday received a tip that three horses were tied to a tree and left to die in a wooded area on Flat Rock Road near Sims in Wilson County.

Animal Control officers were sent to the scene and found the horses, which had no food or water and appeared to be keeping themselves alive by eating the bark off the trees. One officer called it one of the worst cases of animal abuse he's seen in 18 years.

"I couldn't believe they tied them up on such short leads and all, and they're eating the bark off the tree," said Animal Control Officer Bill Allen. "The bark was just clean on some of the limbs on the trees. I couldn't believe it. It was bad."

The horses were seized and taken to North Carolina Equine Quarantine in Raleigh.
