Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

Police broke up an illegal cock fight ring June 5, 2004 after receiving a tip that as many as 50 were staging an elaborate battle in a makeshift fighting space that included Las Vegas-style blackjack tables.

Responding officers arrested at least 30 spectators, though more were seen fleeing the location, said police Cpl. David McBride.

Once inside the dairy, officer discovered a cockfighting arena about 2,000 square feet in size made up of bales of hay stacked nearly two stories high and covered with a tarp, McBride said.

The arena also contained an area where food and drinks were sold and a rooftop lookout. Outside, officers found the carcasses of numerous dead roosters.

Officials with the Humane Society responded to the scene to assess the 40 roosters that were found alive, but determined they were so injured and sick that they should be destroyed, McBride said.

Case Updates

Immigration and Naturalization Service agents deported 12 of the 30 spectators, who had paid $20 apiece to watch the roosters fight inside a tarp-covered, 2,000-square-foot arena that included two blackjack tables and food and drink distribution, according to a spokesman for the Ontario Police Department. The arena was surrounded by stacks of hay, and a ladder gave access to a rooftop lookout.

The owner of the property, in the 7400 block of East Schaefer Avenue, was cited on charges of illegally operating a business, unlawful disposal of animal carcasses and erecting an illegal structure.
