Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Spokane police responding to a welfare check Wednesday in North Spokane made a disturbing discovery. Police say the mother at the apartment had not been home seen since Saturday, and when her 10-year-old daughter came home from school Tuesday the locks on the door had been changed. A neighbor took in the child and called police who, fearing something was wrong, forced their way into the apartment.

Once inside, police found almost a dozen animals, including three underweight dogs, three cats, two rabbits, a gerbil and a rat. Police say, based on what they saw, the woman could face abandonment and animal cruelty charges.

The 10-year-old girl apparently has a 13-year-old sister who has been staying with friends. Both girls are in the custody of Child Protective Services.
