Westmoreland, TN (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, May 9, 2004
County: Sumner

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Charles David Merry

Charles David Merry, 56, of Poplar Grove Road, was arrested on May 9, for allegedly firing a warning shot at a Dalmatian puppy, striking the animal in the back, and killing it.

Reportedly, the puppy chased a cat onto Merry's property, waking him. Merry stated that he went outside to fire a warning shot at the animal. The dog's owner, Gail Glasgow, stated that she was attempting to retrieve the dog when Merry fired five shots at the animal with a revolver, killing it.  Merry stated that his intentions were not to kill the animal, only to scare it into leaving the property.

Merry, released on a $500 bail, was scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on May 12, 2004.
