When undercover narcotics investigators served a search warrant at a house Friday, May 21, 2004, they discovered 95 pit bulls and dog-fighting equipment, said Michal Shanley, spokeswoman for the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Detectives went to Green's home to search his home for drugs. They found cocaine and marijuana before finding the pit bulls.

Sheriff's office units took the dogs to various shelters, and authorities were investigating whether the homeowner was involved in a dog-fighting operation. No charges were filed late Friday related to the dogs.

It appeared that Green was housing a breeding and training operation. Detectives discovered pedigree records, fighting scars on some of the dogs and training equipment such as weight collars, break sticks and heavy chains used for conditioning.

Overall the animals appeared healthy, with a few exceptions. Among the injuries were a broken jaw, broken leg and a shoulder infection, which will receive veterinary treatment. Another was severely ill and had not moved during five of the hours deputies were at the house.

Myron Green, 44, was arrested and charged with two counts of sale of cocaine, three counts of possession of cocaine with intent to sell, one count of possession of marijuana and one count of possession of marijuana with intent to sell.

Terrance Bennett, 19, was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to sell and possession of marijuana.

Investigators seized one- half pound of marijuana and 10 to 15 grams of cocaine.

The Sheriff's Office agriculture unit will continue to investigate Green for "a multitude" of animal-related criminal violations.

Case Updates

Green is being held at the Polk County Jail on $115,000 bail for the 11 drug charges he faces, including possessing and intending to sell marijuana and cocaine.

After finding equipment and records associated with dog fighting, detectives in the Sheriff's Office agriculture unit are investigating to see whether Green is involved in dog fighting, Judd said.

Chapter 828 of the Florida Statutes states that "baiting, breeding, training, transporting, selling, owning, possessing, or using any wild or domestic animal for the purpose of animal fighting or baiting" is a thirddegree felony.

Judd said it doesn't appear that actual fighting occurred at Green's home. However, detectives think his home may have been used to breed and train the dogs.

Legally, Green is still the dogs' owner, but Judd said the county will seek permanent custody of the dogs.
