On November 18, a man found a 12-month old dog lying in a field, bleeding, with her skin hanging off of her body. He brought the Aussie mix to the Wylie animal shelter, where rescuers named her Josephine. She was found on FM 6 near near the towns of Josephine and Nevada, Texas.
According to police, Josephine had been cut, from one flank to the other, with a very sharp instrument. She also had a deep puncture wound in the same area. The skin was peeled back away from muscle as if you were skinning a deer," said veterinarian Dr. Lisa Molidor. "It looks like it was probably mutilation."
Veterinarians at Plano's Windhaven Animal Hospital performed surgery on her; sewing her skin back on required about 60 stitches. There is little doubt that human hands inflicted the precision cuts on Josephine. Dr Rod Shuffield, the veterinarian who donated his services for Josephine's medical care, said " ...I couldn't have done it any better with a scalpel."
I just can't believe anybody can be so cruel," Molidor said. "For somebody's hands to be on this animal and doing something as sick as this ... I mean, when I saw her my heart fell, knowing somebody could do this," Smith said.
Josephine is progressing well with her recovery and the veterinarians expect her to fully heal. She has found a loving home with one of Dr. Shuffield's associates.
