Castrating dog with dental floss
Stuart, FL (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, May 28, 2003
County: Martin

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: James Speetjens

"Animals, we banded and neutered them. This is the way I was taught."

Such was Jimmy Speetjens' reported explanation of his May 28, 2003, attempt to castrate his dog, L'il Man, by wrapping dental floss around the animal's testicles. This February, Speetjens apparently pleaded no contest to felony charges stemming from the incident, in which he muzzled and then mutilated the 11-month-old dog a "common procedure" that he reportedly learned growing up on Alabama farms. L'il Man was later examined by a veterinarian and euthanized because of his ensuing injuries and his positive parvovirus test results.

Speetjens faces up to five years in prison, but his sentencing has been delayed until May 14 by Judge Dwight L. Geiger. According to news sources, Judge Geiger has given Speetjens time to prove that his actions constituted an "acceptable method of castration."

Please urge Judge Geiger to reject Speetjen's argument and remind him that animal abusers must be vigorously sentenced for the sake of both the community at large and its animals. Politely ask that he sentence Speetjens to five years of incarceration and a mandatory mental health evaluation followed by psychological counseling and anger-management classes. To ensure that no more animals fall prey to his alleged sadism, respectfully insist that Speetjens be prohibited from all future contact with animals and that any remaining animals in his charge be immediately located and seized.
