Circuit Judge James Foxman sentenced Braulio Barrientos, 69, of Sagamore Drive in Deltona, to 18 months probation and 50 hours of community service. Barrientos can buy back his community service for $10 an hour and petition to suspend his probation after nine months of good behavior.
Barrientos also could face deportation to Cuba because the conviction is a third-degree felony, punishable by up to five years in jail and/or a $5,000 fine.
Barrientos was arrested Dec. 20 after Volusia County sheriff's deputies raided the property he rented at 786 Fort Florida Road. Deputies were led there after stopping a car on U.S. 17-92 that contained five caged roosters owned by Lucio C. Perez of Zellwood. Perez pleaded no contest to animal fighting, possession of fighting cocks and a forged identity card in February. He was fined $500 and given 18 months probation and 50 hours of community service.
At the Fort Florida Road address, deputies found more equipment associated with cockfighting and confiscated 110 roosters, hens and chicks. The men surrendered the birds to Volusia County. A few were adopted, but most were killed. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
