An Omaha man accused of abusing and killing a 4-month-old boxer puppy will stand trail. Jariel Pittman waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday and was bound over for trial. Prosecutors said Pittman kicked he wife's puppy against a wall during a domestic dispute in February. The dog's lung tore and it died.
Pittman also faces charges for another domestic incident from February. Case UpdatesJariel Pittman will serve at least 16 months of a 32- to 36-month sentence for killing a puppy by throwing it against a wall. Pittman could have received up to five years for the offense.
Judge Gerald Moran said he took Pittman's history of domestic violence into account. Pittman told the judge he needs help with alcoholism and anger management.
Pittman has a protection order against him, filed in June for domestic violence. He was convicted of destruction of property and disturbing the peace. In January, he was convicted of obstructing an officer. In February, he was charged with ramming a vehicle. Jariel Pittman, 24, pleaded no contest Tuesday to felony abuse of an animal. Douglas County District Judge Gerald Moran found Pittman guilty and will sentence him in September.
Pittman faces 20 months to five years in prison after the conviction.
Pittman was enraged at his estranged wife because she wouldn't let him stay in the house. With a child watching, Pittman kicked the woman's 4-month-old boxer puppy. When she continued to refuse to let him stay, Pittman picked up the puppy and threw it about 10 feet against a wall.
