On June 10, 2000, Edgar Knotts allegedly lured a wild squirrel into a trap using peanut butter on a stick.  Once trapped, he repeatedly shot the squirrel with an air rifle at close range.  When police responded to a call of shots fired, the officers reported that they found a squirrel walking in circles in a cage and bleeding severely.  The squirrel died before the officers left.

Knotts reported to police that he had shot the squirrel because it was in his garden.

Knotts was charged with cruelty to animals and discharging a weapon within city limits.
