A Silverthorne man was arrested Wednesday night and accused of cruelty to animals after investigators found numerous unexplained broken bones in his 5 1/2-month old boxer puppy.

Nathan Suchecki, 23, was arrested after Summit County Animal Control received anonymous calls that he was abusing his puppy, Roscoe, according to Leslie Craig, lead animal-control officer.

The bone fractures appear to have occurred over a period of several months, Craig said. Roscoe was also significantly underweight for his breed and age, she said.

Animal Control took custody of Roscoe on April 13.

He remains in protective custody at the Summit County Animal Shelter and is scheduled for an exam by an orthopedic specialist later this week, Craig said.

Case Updates

Judge David Lass sentenced Nathan Suchecki to 60 days in jail and five years probation on Wednesday, more than a month after Suchecki was found guilty of reckless animal cruelty against his former boxer, Roscoe.

Lass also handed Suchecki fines totaling $668 and mandated the Silverthorne resident attend a 12-week anger management group treatment, with individual sessions on his interaction with animals. Of the 60-day sentence, Lass said Suchecki must serve 10 days consecutively and the rest on work release.

However, Lass also granted a stay on the sentence until the 90-day appeal period is over. If the judgment is not appealed, Suchecki would have 10 days before serving his sentence.

A restitution hearing will be held at the beginning of May.

On Feb. 11, a 12-person jury found Suchecki guilty of reckless animal cruelty. Suchecki was charged with felony aggravated assault on an animal after Roscoe was taken from his care last April with nearly 30 broken bones in his ribs and face.

Jury selection was to begin this morning for a three-day trial involving a Silverthorne man who is charged with animal cruelty against his 5-month old bulldog, Roscoe. Nathan Suchecki was arrested on April 27, 2004, two weeks after Summit County Animal Control seized his dog.

Officers found Roscoe with broken ribs and legs, a broken jaw, facial fractures and he was significantly underweight, lead animal control officer Lesley Craig said.

Roscoe was later adopted by a family from the Front Range.

Craig said control officers had been to Suchecki's house in March 2004 after a veterinary clinic informed them of a leg fracture. At the time, the visit was purely educational and Suchecki was not issued a warning, Craig added.

In April, the office received a complaint from Suchecki's neighbor, which is when officers obtained a warrant and took the dog into protective custody, she said.

The charge against Suchecki is a Class 6 felony, which is the lowest felony class, Oldham said. If convicted, Suchecki faces one year to 18 months in jail and fines ranging from $1,000 to $100,000. Oldham said a mental evaluation can be an option at the sentencing phase.

County Court Judge Ed Casias will preside over the case as District Judge David Lass is on sabbatical.
