Jason Gillespie, 20, of the La Jolla Indian Reservation , was jailed on Tuesday, January 13 for alleged animal cruelty.
U.S Border Patrol agents pulled over a pickup truck on the Pala Indian Reservation after noticing the vehicle was dragging something behind it. Three people fled the vehicle on foot and Mr. Gillespie, one of the passengers, was found hiding nearby. A black dog had been tied to the truck's rear bumper with a rope. According to San Diego Sherriff's officials, the agents shot the fatally injured dog to prevent further suffering. The owner of the truck had later reported it stolen and said the dog also belonged to him, but that it had not been tied to the vehicle.
The driver of the truck and one other passenger had not been identified. Mr Gillespie was being held at the Vista Detention Center and was expected to be charged with animal cruelty. References | AP (Associated Press) |
