An 18-year-old man was arrested and charged by Cumberland police after he allegedly kicked his girlfriend's three-month old pit bull that later died from injuries.

Leonard John Plummer Junior of West Oldtown Road was charged with animal mutilation and destruction of property.

Police say he was arguing with his girlfriend at his apartment Wednesday evening when he kicked her dog.

The dog began yelping and was taken to the police station where the alleged crime was reported. Police say the dog died before they could get it medical treatment.

Following a bond hearing, Plummer was jailed until he posted two-thousand dollars bond, pending trial in district court.

The charge of animal cruelty carries a maximum penalty of three years in jail and possibly a fine.
