Animal Shelter Found to Have an Excess of 300 Sick Animals Tulsa, OK (US)Incident Date: Monday, Oct 23, 2000 County: Tulsa
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: » Hope Harder » Hazel Pticock
About 300 dogs and cats were rescued from nonprofit animal "rescue" operation Hope for the Animals, founded by Hope Harder and owned by Hazel Pitcock, on grounds of neglect and unacceptable living conditions. According to Sgt. Sherri Carrier, the animals had overrun the rural property, and those that weren't free to roam were packed 3 or 4 to a carrier. The animals were malnourished and did not have access to water, and some dogs were reportedly eating other dogs. Instances of mange, eye disease, upper respiratory disease, hip dysplasia and missing limbs were so prevalent that it is estimated that half of the animals will need to be euthanized, as shelters cannot accept pets with mange. Also, according to Undersheriff Bill Thompson, animals that were judged to be suffering were euthanized at the scene. The Sheriff's office and SPCA were attempting to place all eligible animals in shelters. No arrests were made, but Capt. Greg Turley said reports would be given to the DA's office who could then decide to press charges. References « More cases in Tulsa County, OK
