An animal rights group is offering $5,000 to find an animal killer in suburban Palm Beach County.

Two weeks ago, an opossum was found impaled by an arrow in the Harbor Cove Development near Lake Worth Road and U.S. 441, said Palm Beach County Animal Control Sgt. Tammie Crawford. The next week, a Muscovy duck was shot with an arrow underneath its wings, as if it was in flight, Crawford said. The duck was found on Teal Court in Royal Palm Beach, near Okeechobee Boulevard and Wildcat Way.

Both animals were left to suffer.

"This person is obviously depraved and is in need of some guidance in life," said Heather Lischin of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida. "Horrible acts of cruelty against animals are just the beginning. It's well established that these cruel acts can escalate into violence against humans."

The opossum was put to sleep; the duck was treated and released at an undisclosed pond. Other animals in the area may be in danger and Lischin urges residents to keep their pets indoors until the arrow-shooter is caught.

The animals were shot with two different types of practice arrows from a compound bow, Crawford said.

The foundation is offering $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the crimes. Anyone with information can call Crawford at 233-1211 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 458-TIPS.
