Jefferson County sheriff's deputies are investigating the death of a small Boston terrier that was shot in his backyard Wednesday.
"He was like my son," Jessica Phillips, 21, said of Rosco, who she said was "the first dog that I've had of my own. ... It's like someone has taken that part of me away."
Phillips' mother found the nearly 2-year-old dog dead when she got home from work about 3:30 p.m. Phillips lives with her mother on Wild Acres Road between Colorado Mills and Daniels Park, south of West Colfax Avenue. Her mother's dog, a chow-mix that also was in the yard, was unharmed.
When animal-control workers came to remove Rosco, they discovered he had been shot and called the Sheriff's Office, Phillips said.
The neighbor behind Phillips had complained some time ago about the dog barking late at night, but Phillips had been bringing the dogs in earlier and said she doesn't think that was still a problem.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Jacki Tallman noted that Phillips' yard is surrounded by a 6- foot-high privacy fence.
Investigators have "a person of interest" they want to interview.
"We don't believe it was an accident," Tallman said. That being the case, she said, it might be wise for people to be more cautious with their pets until the case is solved.
Rosco's remains have been sent to Colorado State University for an autopsy, she said. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
