A 47-year-old man tied his dog to a coffee table and shot it in the head after it pulled trash from the kitchen garbage can, Broward County sheriff's officials said.

William Ard was being held Wednesday on $2,500 bail on charges of cruelty to animals resulting in death, a felony, and cruelty to animals by tormenting, a misdemeanor.

Ard told investigators that "Jake'' struggled with him Tuesday night after he hit the 40-pound collie mix with a rolled up magazine for pulling trash from the garbage can, sheriff's spokesman Kirk Englehardt said.
