Deputy Roger Miller of the sheriff's Community Service Bureau said Michael Dale Blanton, 30, and Angie Marie Hughes, 22, of  Hastings, were charged with not providing adequate medical treatment to an animal after four of their dogs were found to be suffering from severe, untreated cases of mange.

In that case, a female rottweiler and her three puppies were seized from Blanton and Hughes' yard and taken to a veterinarian.

The mange had developed over a long period of time and there was almost no hair on the adult dog, he said.

"Their condition continued to deteriorate. To stop their suffering, the adult and two puppies had to be put down," he said. "The third puppy responded to treatment and has already been adopted out."

Miller said he and Paul Studivant, supervisor for St. Johns County Animal Control, confronted Hughes at her home and asked her why she hadn't taken the mangy dogs to a vet.

She reportedly responded, "I wasn't about to put those nasty things in my new car."

Miller said he also spotted a small pit bull puppy inside her house that had been treated for mange and looked well cared-for.

"So she knew what to do. She just didn't do it for those dogs outside," he said.

Studivant said Miller did outstanding work on investigating this case.

"This dropped animal cruelty to a new level," Studivant said. "I've seen some bad things on this job, but it's been a while since I've seen this bad a case of neglect."

Miller took the warrants to County Judge Charles Tinlin. The arrests were made by Deputy Paul Clark.
