CONVICTED: Was justice served?

Please vote on whether or not you feel the sentence in this case was appropriate for the crime. (Be sure to read the entire case and sentencing before voting.)

weak sentence = one star
strong sentence = 5 stars

more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

5 kittens crushed in trash compactor
Ossining, NY (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Feb 28, 2001
County: Westchester

Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Ronald Hunlock

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

A former prison guard was sentenced to a year in jail in March 2002 for crushing five kittens to death in a trash compactor.

Ronald Hunlock's offense was "so offensive and so calculated and so gratuitously cruel it diminishes the humanity of everybody," Justice Kenneth Lange said.

Hunlock, 48, was convicted of aggravated cruelty to animals.

He discovered the newborn kittens and their mother in an inmate's cell at Sing Sing last March and ordered the inmate to put them in the compactor. When the inmate refused, Hunlock did it himself. The mother cat escaped.

"I made a bad decision and I'm sorry," he said.

Defense attorney Daniel Gallivan said Hunlock thought the cats were deathly ill.

Case Updates

In handing down the sentence, New York State Supreme Court Justice Kenneth Lange called Hunlock's actions "so offensive and so calculated and so gratuitously cruel it diminishes the humanity of everybody." Lange also acknowledged the many letters he has received regarding the case. Ten asked for leniency in sentencing Hunlock. More than 450 asked that he be given the maximum sentence of two years in jail.

Hunlock had been on unpaid leave from his job since being charged. He has now been formally dismissed.
