Jorge Sanchez, 20, ofJohns Island, faces five years in prison and $5,000 in fines for allegedly mistreating and mutilating six rottweiler-mix puppies.

Police say that in June, 2003, Jorge Sanchez "docked" -- or amputated -- the tails of the six puppies by placing rubber bands on their tails. The resulting wounds became seriously infected and four of the puppies, which were only about 10 days old, had to be euthanized. The remaining two have since recovered and placed with new owners.

Authorities stated the fact that the puppies were so young made the crude tail amputations even crueler.

Sanchez faces six counts of animal cruelty. Magistrate Jack Guedalia on Tuesday set Sanchez's bail at $90,000. Sanchez had several warrants for his arrest for failing to appear in court for traffic offenses and was out of jail on bond for a drug charge.

"I think you're a flight risk, and you're a danger to animals," Guedalia told Sanchez.

Sanchez's sister took the puppies to a veterinarian, who then called Charleston County sheriff's deputies.
