The Plainfield man accused of shooting his neighbor's basset hound pleaded not guilty in Danielson Superior Court Wednesday.
William Buchert, 44, of 1 Ashley St., is charged with cruelty to animals, unlawful discharge of a firearm and disorderly conduct.
Police have accused Buchert of shooting the dog, Mr. Bojangles, with a high-powered pellet gun after it urinated in his yard.
Joyce Carpenter, the dog's owner, has followed the case and was in court on Wednesday. She was perplexed by Buchert's plea.
"Apparently I must have buried a living dog," Carpenter said.
"Bo," as the dog was known to Carpenter family members, was a Christmas present in 1996 for her three children.
"At this point I just want it over with," Carpenter said.
Carpenter said her two sons and daughter are getting over the loss.
The family has received an outpouring of support from the community and beyond, which Carpenter said has helped to renew her children's faith in the kindness of strangers.
Carpenter has not had any contact with Buchert since the incident, but said Buchert has told others he never meant to kill the dog.
Buchert is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 18. He is free on a promise to appear. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
