Twelve people were arrested after an investigation into dog fighting, St. James Parish Sheriff Willy Martin said Thursday. A total of 13 pit bull dogs were turned over to veterinarians and euthanized, the sheriff said.

After the arrests, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals asked 23rd Judicial District Attorney Tony Falterman to "vigorously prosecute" the 12 men who were arrested. The organization also called for "psychological evaluation" of those arrested after conviction.

Those arrested were Corey Bowser, 33, 8897 Apt. 1A, Richmond Drive, Laplace; Ivory Cooper III, 19, 2184 Levy Gaudet, Lutcher; Jyvonna Gross, 19, 249 N. Courseault, Lutcher; Keith Hymel, 20, 321 Tania St., Gramercy; Shaude Jackson, 23, 2336 Central St., Lutcher; Lendez Walters, 19, 2112 St. Louis St., Lutcher; Mandarryl Walters, 21, 2112 St. Louis St., Lutcher; Kenneth White, 25, 2487 W. Lebray St., Lutcher; Richard Wiggins Jr., 25, 2406 Lionel Washington, Lutcher; Myron Mills, 22, 3576 La. 44, Paulina; Edward Young III, 19, 2186 Levy Gaudet St., Lutcher; and Angilo A. Victor, 25, 2494 Courseault St., Lutcher.

The investigation began Oct. 16 when St. James deputies raided a dog fight in progress at Hymel Construction on David Road in Lutcher, Martin said. They found pit-bull dog fighting in progress, the sheriff said.

The participants fled on foot, leaving five vehicles abandoned on the property, the sheriff said. An investigation led to the arrest of the 12 men and up to 13 dogs being taken to veterinarians to be euthanzied, Martin said.
