The Arizona Animal Services Division has filed charges of animal cruelty against Robert Syfritt, owner of Bob Kat Ranch in Linden. Syfritt pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of Cruelty to Animals/Neglect.

The charges were filed by a state livestock officer July 7, 2003, following an investigation into complaints by neighbors that Syfritt's horses were not getting enough to eat and one had died. Neighbors also said the horses were suffering because they had not been shod or had their hooves trimmed.

One neighbor, who did not want to be named, said, "The entire time he has been here he's never fed his horses enough. They get so hungry they eat manure and dirt. They're full of worms."

The 10 counts are for 10 separate horses, according to Robert Brown, the Navajo County attorney who is prosecuting the case.

Presently, Syfritt has six horses at the ranch. The horses are rented for trail rides. Syfritt was contacted Tuesday for comment. He said, "They have no evidence of any medical needs or anything else. I'm innocent until proven guilty. It's all a political arena. They all want the property. I have not been presented with any individual medical needs for any of the horses." He said recent pictures prove the horses are in good shape.

Syfritt's trial is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. April 1 at Show Low Justice Court. Navajo County attorney Robert Brown is prosecuting the case for the Animal Services Division.
