A Dewey woman has been sentenced to four years probation for her role in a cruelty to animals case involving a reported 86 chickens and a dog.

Amanda Jean Jantzen, 29, also received $615 in fines and costs after she pleaded guilty to the charge.

Jantzen's codefendant, Kevin Walter Gray, 32, is facing the preliminary hearing phase of his own cruelty to animals case.

According to the Aug. 19, 2003, probable cause affidavit, the case began when Dewey Animal Control Officer Holly Ridenhour received a report of cruelty to animals in the 100 block of South Wyandotte on July 22. She reportedly found a 3-month-old white dog that was described as "apparently starving."

The dog, reportedly a Great Pyrenees breed, weighed approximately 10 pounds, although it should have weighed in the 30 to 40 pound range, Ridenhour reported. The report states that the dog was also described as having mange and was heavily infested with fleas.

Ridenhour also reportedly found 86 chickens in a brooder that was designed to hold 50 chicks for only two weeks. A brooder is a heated enclosure that is designed to help raise chickens or other fowl.

Ridenhour said the chickens inside the device ranged from chicks to adults. Upon arrival, Ridenhour found five birds dead and another five died shortly after being rescued from the feces-filled brooder, according to reports. The birds were also described as having eaten the feces and other dead birds that were in the brooder.

The dog was euthanized due to extreme starvation a short time after the investigation, reports indicate.
