Dog's mouth duct-taped shut Des Moines, IA (US)Incident Date: Saturday, Feb 21, 2004 County: Polk
Disposition: Alleged
Abuser names unreleased
Des Moines animal control officers finally caught a German shepherd-type dog that had been wandering around a south-side Des Moines neighborhood for more than a week with its mouth taped shut. After many reported sightings and calls to the police, the dog was cornered early this week and shot with a tranquilizer dart, but it disappeared into a wooded area and after sleeping the drug off, kept going. The dog was finally captured Wednesday behind a vacant motel.
The dog had worked most of the duct tape off of its mouth with its paws, but still had electrical tape around its nose. The dog was taken to the Des Moines Animal Shelter and will be allowed to settle down before it is examined more extensively. Police are now trying to identify the dog's owner.
