A farmer was cited for two counts of cruelty to animals because humane officials say he failed to provide veterinary care for seven horses, six of which were found dead on his Greene County farm. The seventh had to be euthanized.

Robert R. Anderson, who lives in Cameron, W.Va., called the citations "phony" and said he'd fight them because he believes the animals were poisoned. Anderson said Tuesday that the horses were bleeding from the mouth and nose when they were found on his farm last Wednesday in Aleppo Township.

"Six horses don't just die of malnutrition overnight," Anderson said, in response to reports that the animals appeared to be malnourished.

The Greene County Humane Society hasn't determined how the animals died. They did find a parasite in some manure, but couldn't determine if it came from one of the dead horses or others among the 21 horses Anderson kept on the 96-acre farm.

The other horses remain on the farm and appear to be well cared for, officials said. The citations each carry up to 90 days in jail and a $750 fine.
