An 8-month-old Collie shot multiple times in the face and left for dead is making a remarkable recovery after undergoing surgery in Kentucky.

The handsome pup named Lad, deemed a "miracle" by his vets, is seen recovering in a Louisville, clinic after losing part of his lower jaw in a shooting earlier this month in Owensboro.

Vets with the Arrow Fund, which has taken on the dog's recovery efforts, believe the dog was shot at least three times in the face before he was found days later knocking on death's door.

In addition to his grave wounds they say the dog was found severely emaciated. The nonprofit group, led entirely by volunteers, suspected that it survived only on snow before found.

Lad, named by the group, was immediately placed on painkillers and antibiotics before they were able to safely perform surgery this week.

He's currently using a feeding tube for nutrition but vets hope that there may be long-term solutions such as a prosthetic jaw.

Despite his horrid injuries and undoubtable pain, vets say the dog's positive and playful spirit mirrors his skyrocketing recovery.

Lad is seen being given a feeding tube after losing part of his jaw. Vets expect he'll undergo more surgery.

"It's amazing after being shot in such an atrocity and such a heinous crime that he has the love and spirit, he has such love in his heart to want the closeness to a human," Rebecca Eaves, president of The Arrow Fund, told 11News.

The group is raising money toward Lad's recovery online as well as several other pets in their care that have suffered extreme torture, abuse, and neglect.

Case Updates

The Daviess County Sheriff's Office tells 14News that Matthew Wade Beauchamp was arrested shortly before noon Thursday.

28-year-old Beauchamp turned himself in. He is out of jail on $1000 bond.

Beauchamp is facing a felony charge for torture of a dog.

Sources have told 14News that Beauchamp is the owner of 'Lad' the collie.

Lad was found in the Maceo area in February. He'd been shot in the jaw and was severely malnourished. The front lower portion of his jaw had to be removed.

Lad is at the University California - Davis where they are determining if he will be a candidate for reconstructive surgery.
