Charges: Felony CTA
Alleged: Ricardo Costa
A Ludlow man accused of beating his dog nearly to death has appeared before a judge.
Ricardo Costa, 40, of Ludlow was arraigned Friday in Palmer District Court on a felony charge of attempting to kill, maim, or poison an animal.
Costa allegedly beat his Pomeranian named "Scrunchy" Thursday night, then dumped the dog near Wilbraham/Ludlow town line.
Ludlow Police Sgt. Frank Nowak says that Costa reportedly told officers that when he left the dog in the woods near East Street, he thought the dog was dead.
However, when police found it around 9:00 p.m., the dog was still alive.
"Scrunchy" was taken to Boston Road Animal Hospital in Springfield for treatment.
The MSPCA and Ludlow Animal Control continue to investigate.
Bail was set at $2,500 cash or $25,000 surety. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for March 4.
