Three puppies wounded and left for dead are now recovering at the Bloomington Animal Shelter.  Now named Sierra, Blake and Harold, three 9-week old puppies were found inside a trash dumpster last week.

The dogs were found tied up in a plastic garbage bag after a man taking out the trash heard whining and barking coming from a trash dumpster near his home.

"For any dog it's just not the right thing to do. These are living creatures that feel pain", said Laurie Ringquist, the shelter's director.

Ringquist says when the dogs were brought in, they were in pretty bad shape. "It does make you angry and it makes me feel like we need to do more education as to why we're here and what we can do.  Places like us exist for a reason and we are here to take in these kinds of animals and treat them and find them homes."

All three dogs are now recovering.  Blake has gone through extensive surgery to repair several gaping wounds. Harold's face is still swollen from a concussion. Sierra is limping from an infection caused by two puncture wounds.

The dogs may be the only ones that will ever know how they got hurt. But it was definitely a person who decided to throw these little lives away.  "Obviously dogs don't jump into a dumpster all on their own.  Someone took those poor little babies and put them in a garbage bag and put them in the dumpster", said Ringquist.  "It would have been a very horrible death.  Cold and hunger - a very horrible death."

The case is especially concerning because violence against animals is a sign of deep mental disturbance. Violent acts toward animals have long been recognized as indicators of a dangerous psychopathy that does not confine itself to animals, according to PETA. The FBI has found that a history of cruelty to animals is one of the traits that regularly appear in its computer records of serial rapists and murderers, and the standard diagnostic and treatment manual for psychiatric and emotional disorders lists cruelty to animals as a diagnostic criterion for conduct disorders.

Two of the puppies will be on antibiotics for the next few weeks.  All three will need some extra special attention. They will all make a full recovery and can be adopted as early as this week.
